Engineering an advanced, adjustable vacuum print bed for Fujifilm’s HB60 wide format printer.

The Journey

Consistent, secure media positioning is essential to get the perfect print. Fujifilm approached us to analyse and fix the issue of low suction and overworked, loud pumps on their HB60 print bed. This involved an in depth route cause analysis, flow simulation and system redesign to improve the flow. In parallel we were also asked to design a system to allow the operator to easily adjust the bed and ensure a perfectly level surface.

Airflow simulation

The print bed is split into zones to focus the suction and utilise the pumps more efficiently. Each zone can be turned on or off depending on the size of the media to be printed on.
 
CFD (computational fluid dynamic) simulation was used to identify restrictions in the flow, make the pressure distribution more even and improve the ducting layout. New pump models were also specified ensuring we had enough pressure and flow.

The Outcome

A quieter, more efficient system able to securely hold even thicker boards with ease without compromising on speed. The adjustable print bed ensures a perfectly level and stable surface to print on and allows the operator to fine tune as needed.
