Vortex Telescopic Camera Mast
Design Challenge: Tall camera masts have alway been attached to trucks beds and have required a cameraman at the top to operate the camera.
When BBC cameraman, Matthew Gladstone, found himself freezing cold on top of a camera tower, whilst ladies were sunbathing on the ground below, he thought ‘there must be a better way to do this!’. There was, and it turned out to be the Vortex camera mast.
Solution: Vortex is a remote-operated, compact camera mast capable of filming shots whilst travelling smoothly from ground level up to 30 metres.
Starting from a napkin sketch, 'The Mast' took us all 3 years to design and build but is now gaining the recognition it deserves. In the past year it has filmed the Grand National, 3 Formula One races, the London Marathon and many more top events. You can see more images and videos on the Cammotion website.
UPDATE: Vortex has won an award from the Guild of Television Cameramen for best new product!
